Gripsholms Castle

Mariefred, Strängnäs

Gripsholm Castle houses a unique collection of furniture and artworks spanning four centuries. The castle was built in the 16th century at the initiative of Gustav Vasa and its most famous 16th-century state apartment is Duke Karl’s Chamber, which is one of Sweden’s best-preserved interiors of this era. During Sweden’s period as a great power, significant changes and additions were made on the orders of Queen Hedvig Eleonora.

The castle’s attractions include one of Europe’s best-preserved 18th-century theatres, which Gustav III had fitted out in one of the castle’s round Renaissance towers.

Gripsholm Castle is also internationally famous for its large collection of portraits – the National Portrait Collection – comprising portraits of notable people from the reign of Gustav Vasa to the present day. The castle’s interiors can most easily be visited in the summer months, either independently or on a guided tour. Pre-booked groups are welcome all year round.
